Wine Picks

Shari’s Picks® for August!

Summer reaches its peak in August! Whether you’re planning a backyard BBQ, a lakeside picnic, or a casual evening on the patio, this is the ideal time for refreshing, chilled wines.

This month, I have a selection of four Picks to explore! Starting with a smartly packaged rosé, we move to a trendy dry sparkling red, then a fruity red that pairs perfectly with grilled meats and ends with a non-alcoholic beer for a change of pace.

Pretty pink Rosé wines are perfect in the summer! Served chilled, they range from dry and crisp to fruity and lush. Provence in the south of France is famous for producing some of the most delicate and refreshing rosés, and wine store shelves feature a large selection at this time of year. From France and packaged in a 1.5 L pouch is Calvet Rose, IGP Terres Du Midi. I love the unpretentious and practicality of this package! It is perfect for large gatherings, packs perfectly for a trip and will not break poolside. Sadly, my sister-in-law and I have noticed the price creeping up over the past couple of years, and it is now $22.60. The wine is pale pink with crisp berry aromas and flavours, followed by a crisp finish. Calvet Rose, IGP Terres Du Midi is a crowd pleaser that pairs with fresh salads, grilled chicken, sushi and goat cheeses.

Are you ready for a dry sparkling red wine? The trend of sparkling Lambrusco wines is on the rise, and for good reason. These wines have evolved from sweet and mass-produced to high-quality, with dry versions available. I was initially skeptical, but after trying Labrusca Lambrusco Rosso Secco DOC with friends, we were pleasantly surprised! This refreshing, dry, fruity red is perfect for casual get-togethers. Labrusca Lambrusco Rosso Secco DOC pairs beautifully with pizza, BBQ ribs, charcuterie, and cheese boards.

Released last month in VINTAGES is Poderi di Luigi Einaudi Dogliani 2022. Dogliani DOCG is a wine designation from the Piedmont wine area in northern Italy. Produced from the Dolcetto grape variety, this wine is known for being fresh, fruity and easy-drinking. Poderi di Luigi Einaudi Dogliani 2022 has a deep purple colour, earthy cherry aromas, soft tannins and a zesty balanced finish. Serve slightly chilled with roasted vegetables, grilled red meats, pasta dishes and Pecorino cheese.

I recently hosted a luncheon for a group of friends from work. One guest brought beer with low alcohol content called Guinness 0. He claimed it was very close in taste to the original Guinness and preferred it when he needed to drive. I was intrigued, so my husband and I tried it. He was right! And Guinness 0 has become a regularly stocked item in our house. As described on the LCBO website, Guinness 0 is brewed just like the Guinness Stout, using the same natural ingredients before removing the alcohol through a cold filtration method. It pours with the familiar dark liquid and creamy head, with hints of coffee, chocolate and bitter-sweet roasted notes, providing all the flavour you expect without the alcohol. You may be disappointed if you expect this to be priced lower than the real Macoy. They are essentially the same price. Serve with burgers, braised meats, hearty salads and strong cheeses.

While enjoying the warm August weather, it’s important to remember that most summer wines reveal their best flavours when served chilled. Aim for about 45-50°F for whites and rosés and 55-60°F for lighter reds. By serving your wines and beers at the right temperature, you can ensure the best tasting experience. So, pour a glass, relax, and make the most of these warm, sunny days!

Cheers!
